Rebound ahead? Tonnage records uptick in July

Rebound ahead? Tonnage records uptick in July

The Truck Tonnage Index notes a modest 0.3% increase as of July, back up from a 1.8% drop the previous month. While the improvement was small, it suggests the trucking industry could be slowly recovering.

So how's it looking? Compared to this time last year, the tonnage index was still down by 0.9%, continuing a trend of lower year-over-year performance. Statistics showed that actual freight hauled rose 3.4% in July compared to June, noting a short-term boost in trucking activity.

Can we celebrate? While any increase is cause for celebration, it remains to be seen what lies ahead. There are many factors that can impact these numbers. But, there seems to be promise for the future as figures continue to indicate signs of growth.

Why this matters: This data is crucial for transportation professionals as trucking accounts for 72.6% of domestic freight transportation, making it a key indicator of the U.S. economy's health.

Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance targeting brakes

Brake Safety Week kicks off August 25. The week-long inspection effort aims to crack down on brake system violations in commercial vehicles. To prepare, fleets should conduct regular maintenance and checks, such as examining air chambers, hoses, and brakes to ensure proper component alignment.

Why this matters: Last year, nearly 13% of inspected vehicles were taken out of service due to brake-related issues. (Heavy Duty Trucking)
