REGULATIONS

Input wanted to help shape future trucking regulations

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is opening up a comment period for various documents in its guidance portal. The agency wants carriers to share advice on whether the documents should be updated, changed or dropped altogether.

“FMCSA invites the public to identify and provide input on existing guidance documents that are good candidates for revision or rescission,” the agency said.

The portal has more than 1,000 documents on topics ranging from ELD operations, to the Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse, to emergency declarations. The agency will consider comments until Sept. 12.

Why it matters: The rules governing trucking have the most impact on the businesses operating in the sector. The agency’s open review and comment period gives industry a chance to make known what is, and isn’t, working between the public and private sectors.

HEALTH ON THE ROAD
“If a driver can take care of their physical, it directly impacts, positively, their mental.”

- Brandon Rothrock, founder and CEO of B-Lean Fitness

Shifting sleep schedules, sitting for long periods, meals on the go – these factors can all make it tough for truck drivers to maintain a healthy lifestyle. For drivers, it’s not as simple as standing up from your desk every hour. That’s why Brandon Rothrock has designed a weight-loss coaching service exclusively for truck drivers, called B-Lean Fitness. Bob Bowman, editor in chief of SupplyChainBrain, interviewed Rothrock about his business. POLITICS
New bill could crush small trucking businesses

Local governments and trucking groups are speaking out against a bill that could put heavier trucks on the road. The bill, introduced last year and now being pushed for a vote in the House, creates a pilot allowing six-axle trucks weighing up to 91,000 pounds to operate on federal interstates.

Why it matters: Opponents of the bill say it’s too costly for small carriers to upgrade axles, putting them at a disadvantage. Plus, heavier trucks could take a toll on the nation’s already-stressed infrastructure. (Land Line)

BUSINESS

Convenience chain expands footprint for truckers
7-Eleven is growing its 7Fleet Diesel Network, which is designed for professional truck drivers. With 375 locations currently, the convenience chain announced plans to grow to 500 by next year. The locations feature diesel canopies, restaurants, parking, truck merchandise, and more.

Why it matters: There’s a severe dearth of truck parking spots and places for drivers to rest. Any expansion of facilities can help to ease the shortage. (Transport Topics)

PRODUCT

Daimler recalls 3,000 trucks
One of the largest manufacturers of heavy-duty trucks has issued a recall for thousands of 2025 model year trucks. Tie rod failures could disrupt steering, and studs could crack or break on models like the Freightliner 108SD, Cascadia, and Western Star 47X.

Why it matters: Any carrier with these trucks in their fleet will need to get their vehicles inspected, to ensure safe operations on the road. (Trucking Dive)
